The Yellow Leaf Mystery: Is Your Soil pH Locking Out Your Harvest?

You’ve bought the best seeds. You’ve spent hours weeding. You’ve added compost until your back ached. But despite all that effort, your plants just don’t look... right.
The leaves are turning a sickly yellow, growth has stalled, and your prized blueberries look like they’ve seen a ghost. Most gardeners assume it’s a lack of fertilizer and add more, but more often than not, that just makes the problem worse.

The truth? Your soil has likely locked its doors.
Soil pH is the invisible hand of the garden. If it’s too high (Alkaline) or too low (Acidic), the nutrients you’ve worked so hard to put into the ground become chemically glued to it. Your plants are sitting in an all you can eat buffet, but they are starving to death.
The Sweet Spot: Why 6.5 is the Magic Number
Think of soil pH on a scale of 0 to 14.
pH 4.0 - 5.5: Sour or Acidic (Common in peat heavy or high rainfall areas).
pH 6.0 - 7.0: The Golden Zone. This is where almost all vegetables, flowers, herbs can grab nutrients easily
pH 7.5+: Alkaline (Common in chalky areas or where hard tap water is used).
Scenario A: Alkaline Lockout
If your new leaves are yellow with green veins (Iron Chlorosis), your pH is likely too high. In alkaline soil, iron and manganese become unavailable.

Scenario B: The Acid Trap
If your cabbages are failing, moss is taking over, or roots look "burnt" and stubby, your soil is likely too acidic. This can lead to aluminum toxicity and a total lack of Calcium.
The Steady Fix: Garden Lime. Raising pH is a slower process. Adding lime "sweetens" the soil, encouraging beneficial bacteria to return and making phosphorus available again.
